Class 3 vs Class 4 Shingles: What's the Difference — and What It Can Do for Your Insurance Bill

New architectural shingle roof in Charlotte NC

If you've priced a new roof lately, you've probably run into the phrase “impact-resistant shingles” — usually followed by “Class 3” or “Class 4.” It sounds like marketing. It isn't. These classes come from a standardized impact test, and in a hail-prone market like Charlotte, the difference can show up both on your roof and on your insurance bill.

Where the classes come from

Impact ratings follow the UL 2218 standard. In the test, steel balls of increasing size are dropped on a shingle from heights that mimic hailstone impacts. A Class 3 shingle has to survive a 1.75-inch steel ball without cracking; Class 4 — the highest rating — has to survive a 2-inch ball dropped from 20 feet, twice, in the same spot.

Translation: Class 3 shrugs off the hail Charlotte sees most years. Class 4 is built for the storm you hope never comes — but that, statistically, eventually does.

What Class 4 actually gets you

  • Fewer cracked and bruised shingles after a serious hail event — often the difference between a repair and a full claim
  • A stronger reinforced mat (often SBS “rubberized” asphalt) that also resists wind damage better
  • Potential insurance premium discounts — many carriers in the Carolinas offer them for UL 2218 Class 4 roofs
  • A stronger resale story: an impact-rated roof is a documented upgrade

About those insurance discounts

Many insurers offer meaningful discounts on the wind/hail portion of your premium for a certified Class 4 roof — the exact number varies by carrier and policy. Two things to know before you count the savings:

  • You'll typically need a certificate from your roofer confirming the installed product and its UL 2218 rating — we provide this with every impact-resistant installation.
  • Some carriers pair the discount with a “cosmetic damage waiver,” meaning purely cosmetic hail marks may not be covered. Ask your agent how your policy words it.

Is the upgrade worth it?

Class 4 shingles usually cost more per square than standard architectural shingles — but the premium is modest as a share of the whole project, and it buys real protection plus a possible recurring discount. If you're already replacing your roof after storm damage, upgrading to Class 4 at the same time is the cheapest that upgrade will ever be.

We install Class 3 and Class 4 systems from GAF, IKO, Owens Corning, and CertainTeed — and we'll tell you honestly whether the upgrade makes sense for your home. Call (800) 698-3888 for a free inspection and a straight answer.
