How a Roof Insurance Claim Works in North Carolina — Step by Step

Charlotte home with a new roof after an approved insurance claim

If a storm damaged your roof, your homeowners policy likely covers the replacement — but the process in between confuses almost everyone the first time. Here's the step-by-step reality of how it works in North Carolina, based on the claims we walk through with Charlotte homeowners every season.

Step 1: Professional inspection (before you file)

Don't file blind. An inspection with photo documentation tells you whether the damage meets the threshold insurers actually pay on. We do these free, and we're honest about it — if your roof doesn't have a claim, we say so, because a denied claim still goes on your record.

Step 2: Filing the claim

You call your carrier (or file online) with the storm date and our documentation. The insurer assigns a claim number and schedules an adjuster visit — usually within one to two weeks.

Step 3: The adjuster meeting — don't do it alone

The adjuster inspects your roof and decides what the insurer will pay for. We meet them on your roof, walk them through every documented impact, and speak their language — test squares, hit counts, mat fractures. Homeowners who have their contractor at this meeting consistently get more complete claim scopes.

Step 4: The paperwork, decoded

  • Scope of loss — the insurer's line-item list of what they'll pay for. We review it and flag anything missed (underlayment, code items, ventilation).
  • ACV vs RCV — most policies pay Actual Cash Value first, then release the Recoverable Depreciation after the work is done. That second check is real money; don't leave it unclaimed.
  • Deductible — the only part that's yours by design. Be wary of any contractor offering to “eat” it: in North Carolina that's illegal, and it's a red flag about everything else they do.

Step 5: Build day and closeout

Once the claim is approved, we schedule the replacement — most roofs are done in one day. After completion we send the final invoice and certificate to your insurer, which releases the depreciation payment. You get a new roof, a manufacturer warranty, and our workmanship warranty in writing.

If your claim is denied

Denials happen — sometimes because the first inspection was rushed. You have the right to a re-inspection. We've helped homeowners overturn denials by producing better evidence: more photos, hit counts, and documentation that meets the insurer's own criteria. If we believe your damage is real, we don't give up after the first no. Call (800) 698-3888 and we'll take a look.
